Protecting your furniture and belongings
With the cost of living at an all time high and the economy only just starting to recover after a turbulent year, many of us are trying our best to keep our necessary expenditure down. By following a few simple steps you can keep the cost of your insurance premiums down to free up some much needed cash. One of the easiest ways to do this is in the home, by making sure it’s properly insured and secure. Here are a few tips to help push down the cost of your insurance premiums.
Buildings Insurance
Home insurance is split into two categories; buildings and contents insurance. Buildings will of course cover the structural makeup of your home and can be extended to include sheds, garages and swimming pools. However, many people overvalue their houses when insuring them and it’s important not to do this with your home as this will inevitably push up the cost. Remember that insurance companies only want to know how much it will cost to rebuild your home, not what price it would fetch if you sold it. If you’re unsure of its rebuild cost it might be worth having a surveyor value it for you as the initial cost of this could easily be recouped if in turn your premium is lowered.
Contents Insurance
Contents insurance appears fairly straightforward, but you do need to be careful when insuring your belongings. Your Indian, Chinese or contemporary wood furniture should be automatically covered by your premium, unless it is of a particularly high value, in which case you’ll need to inform your insurer. Things which aren’t often covered as standard are specialist sports equipment like surfboards and skis, antiques and artwork, as well as bicycles. You can keep your premium down and still insure these things by making sure they’re locked away. The old saying of ‘out of sight, out of mind’ works for burglars too; what they don’t see they won’t take. Installing a burglar alarm will also reduce the cost of your premium.
Lastly, make sure you search online for any special offers from insurers, such as Kwik Fit Insurance’s 15% discount on combined home insurance. Shopping around for a good deal saves you around £200 on average. So once you’ve filled your home with wonderful furniture and belongings be sure to get it properly covered.
